Join Melissa Benoist (Supergirl, Glee) as she and others from the Broadway musical “Beautiful the Musical” visit Google NYC and discuss theatre/Broadway in general, and more specifically dive into being women in the industry and how they have come to be where they are.
Melissa Benoist has her Broadway premiere in Beautiful, but is best known for her role as Supergirl.
“I don’t want to know if Carole is in the audience until after, but I would like to meet her,” says Melissa.
Melissa left her first love of theatre for a bit for television (SVU episodes, Glee, Supergirl), but is happy to be back on stage where she “feels like herself onstage.”
She took on the Beautiful role (and her Broadway debut) for a few months during her Supergirl hiatus.
Melissa talks about the different requirements and skills across theater (be louder), TV, and movies (like on Whiplash she had to be so subtle she wasn’t sure she was doing anything.)
One month in to her Broadway premiere, Melissa says she underestimated the difficulty. “I’m used to 16 hour days in costume under lights, but on stage with a live audience it’s more exhausting than Supergirl ever was. You have to mean it.”
In the #MeToo and #TimesUp era, Melissa says she has only felt warmth and love since joining this particular company (doing Beautiful). She says she sees things changing on Supergirl as well. “What are we saying and adding to the conversation? How will women and young girls feel about this? We call ourselves humanists vs feminists.”
